Connecting Instagram to a bot

How to link an Instagram account to the tool that will answer for it, safely and through the official door.

A bot is not a special kind of Instagram account. It is a normal Professional account that you have given a tool permission to read and answer messages for. "Connecting" means granting that permission through Meta's own login screen.

Instagram account→Meta login and permission→Bot tool→Auto replies

You never hand over your password. You approve access once, and you can remove it any time.

Before you connect

1

Use a Professional account

Business or Creator. Personal accounts cannot be connected to any official automation.

Settings → Account type and tools → Switch to professional account
2

Turn on two-factor login

A connected account is a bigger target. Protect it before you link anything.

Accounts Center → Password and security
3

Allow tools to see messages

Some tools need this switch on, otherwise they connect but never receive a message.

Settings → Messages and story replies → Message controls → Connected tools
4

Link a Facebook Page, if asked

Many tools still connect through a Facebook Page. If yours asks for one, create a Page and link the Instagram account to it first.

Two ways to connect

Path A · easiest

A chatbot service

Sign up→Connect Instagram→Approve
  • ManyChat, Chatfuel or similar
  • Press "Connect Instagram" inside the tool
  • Meta's login opens, you pick the account and approve
  • No code, ready in about 15 minutes
  • Free tiers are limited, then a monthly fee
Path B · your own bot

Meta's Instagram API

Developer app→Login→Webhook
  • Create an app at developers.facebook.com
  • Add the Instagram product and its login
  • Ask for the messaging permission
  • Point a webhook at your server to receive messages
  • Works for your own account while testing; serving other people's accounts needs Meta's app review

Which one? Pick Path A unless you want the bot to live inside your own software. Path B is free to run but takes a developer and, for public use, a review by Meta.

Check the connection worked

1

Message it from a second account

Send a DM with your trigger word and wait for the reply.

2

Look at what you approved

The tool should appear in your list of connected apps. This is also where you disconnect it.

Settings → Website permissions → Apps and websites

Rules that keep the account safe

Do

  • Connect only through Meta's official login screen
  • Say in the bio that replies are automated
  • Reply inside the 24 hours after a person's last message

Don't

  • Type your Instagram password into a third-party app
  • Use tools that log in as you and click around
  • Message people who never contacted you
